Risk Assessment for Hand Intensive Activities

TEXT BRIEF


Wrist disorders are interesting problems with different predisposal factors. Work-related wrist disorders have a dynamic relationship with different kinds of risk variables: Physical risk factors: originated from different activities of a job/task, which translates into some physical effects on the body. Psychosocial risk factors: evolves from organizational aspects of work; although these do not have any direct mechanism, they influence the development and progression of wrist disorders indirectly.
Design variables: these are the modification point to change or maintain the effects of physical risk factors and indirectly of the psychosocial risk factors. Four types of wrist problems are considered here:
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
De Quervain’s syndrome
Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS)
The epidemiology of WMSDs is largely dependent on work pattern and dynamics. In this case, due to the advancement of digital technology, working pattern is changing. This, in turn, is causing more intensive activities of wrist and fingers. This is also spreading in recreational and lifestyle activities. Thus, in this context, the interaction of all the responsible factors and their effects are also changing.

Instructions: The following steps should be followed:-
1. Identify any activity/ task/ job/ work to be studied.
2. Observe the following variables: Repetitive wrist movement duration (hrs/day) and intensity (cycle time); Repetitive finger movement duration (hrs/day); Sustained position durations of wrist and fingers (% of working time); forceful exertion intensity by one hand (kg) and duration (% of working time); finger flexion and extension duration (hrs/day); vibration on hand duration (hrs/day); vibration intensity in terms of frequency weighted acceleration (m/s2 ); wrist flexion duration (hrs/day).
3. Calculate the component risk level and total risk level from the tables.
4. Compare with Action Levels to decide next step.
